 Run the Race: “When you do not feel like it.”
The Word of the Lord: Mark 9:2-9
 
The Scriptures reveal insights about discouragement, its causes, 
and what God offers to help us get through it.

• As far as Elisha was concerned, that recent victory over the prophets of Baal amounted to nothing. Why? Because even after that, what could he see as far as Israel was concerned? Nothing good.

• Elisha was profoundly depressed and discouraged in his service to the Lord.

Jesus shows the disciples something: a vision of the goal. Jesus is transfigured before them, in light so powerful and blindingly bright that they are stunned.

Peter reminds them that what they saw on the mountain was Jesus as He would be when He comes in power and great glory at the end of the age.
 
What is our hope in those times of tedious, depressing trials?

• A sure testimony, an eyewitness account of the power, the glory, and the majesty of our Lord’s return to the earth.

• Many times, we also fail, not because we're facing such hardships or threatened by terrible dangers, but because we lose sight of our destination.

John writes at the beginning of his gospel in chapter 1:14, “We beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Run the Race: “God has for us”

HOW TO RUN THE RACE: GOD HAS FOR US…

• The first principle of running the race: Training.

• Second, running the race well requires perseverance.

 
" perfecter of our faith, who Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." – Hebrews 12:1-2

• Third, running well requires a good support system.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! . . . Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. . . . Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” – 1 Peter 4:8-10

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11
 

• Fourth, running well requires that we keep the goal in mind.

"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." – Hebrews 12:2

"Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 3:13-14

• Fifth and finally, to run the race well, you must be on the right path.

"All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away." – Isaiah 64:6
“. . . everything that does not come from faith is sin." – Romans 14:23a

Five Fatal Flaws of the Priest in Malachi’s Day

• They dishonored God’s holiness. 

Look at verse 2: “If you do not listen and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings.” Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.”
 
 

• They departed from the way.

 

• They destroyed others.

Look at the second half of verse 8 – “and by your teaching have caused many to stumble. Whether we like it or not, others are watching us.”

• They desecrated the covenant.

“You have violated the covenant with Levi, says the LORD Almighty.”

• They were despised by the people.

Look at verse 9 – “So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.” They were people pleasers - they valued what the people thought more than what God did.
 
One of the lessons of Malachi is a lesson in the failures of the priests.
                                      We want to learn from their mistakes and search our hearts
to make sure we don’t fall into any of the same traps.
 
Have I failed to view God with great honor?
Have I failed to follow God’s ways?
Have I hurt others by my bad example?
Have I lost my passionate commitment to following God?
Have I lost respect for others through the compromises I've made in my life?

Revelation 3:19, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”

Israel had become lukewarm and indifferent to the things of God, and here God judges them by sending a swarm of locusts against them (Joel 1:3-6).

1 Peter 4:17 “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”

THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT COMMANDS GIVEN.
Psalm 34:18, “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit.”
 
 
THERE IS SPECIAL COMFORT GIVEN

First, God invites us to see His Nature.

Joel 2:13 “And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.”

Next, God invites us to see His Nurture.

Isaiah 24:11 “There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened; the mirth of the land is gone.”

Finally, God invites us to see His Nearness.
