Excavate: Acts 6-7

Hebrews: 5:11-13, 6:1-3
“We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.”
“Therefore, let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward toward maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God instruction about cleansing rites, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting we will do so.”

The Word of the Lord: Acts 6:1, “In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being over looked in the daily distribution of food.”

  • Every time a group feels like they are getting overlooked it always affects unity in the church.

Acts 6:2, “So the twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.”

Acts 6:3-4, “Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Acts 6:5, “this proposal please the whole group.”

Ephesians 4:11-13, “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

The Early Church Needed to Prioritize to Get the Best Investment.
Notice 3 Things…

  • The church acted in love and in humility.

  • The whole church was pleased.

  •  God was preparing the church for future growth.

Acts 8:1, “On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.”

Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 6:7, “So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.”
