Breadcrumbs: Adages – Proverbs 16-31


Adages: a short statement expressing truth:  Proverbs is Truth for life.

Proverbs 1:2-3, “for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair.”

Proverbs 32:27, “For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.”

A Review of our Reading: Chapters 1-15

3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”

 4:23, Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

  • Solomon is emphasizing the spiritual aspect, the spirit of man.

 11:13, “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.”

14:12, There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death.”

15:1, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

15:22, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

Chapters 16-31
21:9, “Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

22:15, “Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.”

24:3-4, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;
 through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

26:20, “Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.”

27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

31:30, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Proverbs14:4, “Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox come abundant harvests.”

  • Lord, give us harvesters…

Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

  • There is life or death in your tongue.

We can build up or tear down… or  Choose to Speak life into people.

Proverbs 21:23, “Those who guard their mouths, and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.”
