23-07-09 Breadcrumbs: Undertakings –1, 2, 3 John & Jude

STAY COMMITTED TO THE TRUTH.

  • You cannot claim to be a Christian and actively live sinfully.
I John 5:13, “These things I have written to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”

  • He wants them to understand what a true follower is all about.
I John 1:5-7, This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

  • The marks of a true Christian are obedience, love, and a continued faith in Christ.
I John 1:9, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

IF WE SAY…
We have fellowship with God yet walk in darkness, we lie. (1:6)
BUT IF…
We walk in the light; we have fellowship with each other and are cleansed by Jesus’ blood. (1:7)

IF WE SAY…
We have no sin, we deceive ourselves. (1:8)
BUT IF…
If we confess our sins, we are forgiven. (1:9)

IF WE SAY…
We have not sinned, we call God a liar (1:10)
BUT IF…
We sin, Jesus is our advocate. (2:1)

I John 2:1-2, My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

  • What Jesus wants of us is obedience to his word that we follow in truth and live in the truth of his word.

I John 2:3-6, We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him:  Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Has the Holy Spirit ever said this to you?
I John 3:18, Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

  • We are not just loving with words; it is with action.

Ezekiel 33:1-32, My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.
