Breadcrumbs – Stay the Course – James
You see the influence of Jesus throughout the book. There are strong similarities to Jesus’s teaching in Matthew 5-7.
James 1:2 Matthew 5:10-12
James 1:4 Matthew 5:48
James 1:5 Matthew 7:7-12
James 1:22 Matthew 7:21-27
James 2:12-13 Matthew 6:14-15
James 3:11-13 Matthew 7:16-20
James 4:11-12 Matthew 7:1-5
James 5:13 Matthew 6:19-21
James 5:12 Matthew 5:33-37
James 1:19-20, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
James 1:22-25, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”
James 3:3-10, “When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”
James 1:26, “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.”
James 4:1, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?”
James 5:13-15, “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.”
In the Church of the Nazarene, we have 16 Articles of Faith.
Article 14.
We believe in the bible doctrine of divine healing and urge our people to seek to offer the prayer of faith for the healing of the sick. We also believe God heals through the means of medical science.

- As Christians we should view our difficulties differently than those who are not Christian.
- James is trying to help us with practical advice of how to be a Christian.
